ALPHA Celebration ALPHA Celebration

The ALPHA Celebration included so many varieties of creativity-- there were skits, Choir performances, dances, songs, pictures, and lots of incredible food!  Also, many people dressed up like Native Americans or other Thanksgiving figures based off of a movie that is quite popular here in Taiwan.  The skits and dance were done by different ALPHA small groups and new friends.  It really felt like we were in a big living room just being family--goofy and enjoying it.  At the end of the Celebration, there was a Powerpoint with pictures and music--it was very meaningful.

We are now getting prepared for our ALPHA Christmas event which will be next weekend.  Until then, several ALPHA small groups are continuing to get together weekly.  The Christmas event will be a nice time for veteran ALPHA friends and new ALPHA friends to come back and visit us at Truth Church.

Thank you for your partnership and prayers!

Alpha Week 10: What is the church? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kalan
Tuesday, 06 December 2011 06:55

ALPHA Week 10 went spectacularly thanks to Julanne's creativity and honesty about the church. Most of the people who come at this point in the ALPHA season are committed to their groups, their friends or learning more about the Gospel. Foreign coworkers are well integrated with the Chinese ALPHA community through small groups or other service and they really help the atmosphere move along instead of standing out or distracting.

We can see people excited for the upcoming ALPHA celebration and hope that it will be an opportunity for people to share in God's work in their lives.

Julianne finished the regular ALPHA talks by sharing about the church. This topic is important for Christianity because it shows how Christ is present in the world now, how he is working in the world, and what makes Christians unique from other people and other worshipers. It is especially pertinent to Taiwanese people because they need to see the distinction between being part of the church (which includes gathering for worship) and just attending a ceremony of worship (which is most common in Taiwanese local religions.

Julianne showed an entertaining video at the end of her talk to illustrate the connectedness, joy, and attraction of Christ through the church-His people).

PLEASE PRAY for the following important things:

  • The Spirit would press more strongly on seekers' hearts as the end of the ALPHA season approaches.
  • That seekers would see Jesus working in them and in the lives of their ALPHA community and be attracted to Him through this.
  • For perseverance as the ALPHA season is almost over.
  • For creativity, excitement and fellowship at the ALPHA celebration.

ALPHA Week 9: Why and how can we tell others about Jesus? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Caty
Wednesday, 30 November 2011 04:42

Week 9 of ALPHA we had the opportunity to hear Kelley speak.  She spoke about why and how we should tell others about Jesus.  Kelley gave great examples of sharing Jesus in her own life, and we also heard a piece of her mom's testimony.  It was nice to get a little insight into Kelley's life.  Her examples and points really spoke to the seekers at ALPHA.  After Kelley spoke, we had our small group time and were able to discuss what each group member thought about the talk.  As always, the message was great and small group time was encouraging.

Please pray for the ALPHA discussion groups to roll over into becoming regular Truth Church cell groups, and for all the Seekers to remain stable in attendance!

2011 Alpha Week 8 - How Does God Guide Us? PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Suppe
Thursday, 10 November 2011 13:28

At week eight we are definitely experiencing the wonderful maturing that comes in the second half of Alpha.  The groups are growing closer together in friendship, trust and spiritual depth.  And new seekers are continuing to arrive.  Recent postings on Facebook show that they are growing in friendship after the Alpha weekend and that some groups have been getting together outside of Alpha.

In this second half of Alpha, the groups are taking responsibility to lead the games and singing.  This week a girls group had each group draw a big poster picture of one of the speakers of the previous weeks.  They drew quite nice caricatures, generally funny cartoon-like, and people had to guess who they were.  Then the groups with the best drawings received special food snacks as prizes!  After that a group of guys led us all in singing a modern version of Amazing Grace in English, giving an explanation in Chinese of what the song was all about.

Dillon gave the talk, which was on “How God Guides us”.  He showed us that God guides us in many ways, including by his Word in the Bible, by the Holy Spirit in prayer, through Christian friends and by divinely controlled circumstances.  In the process he wove Bible verses with personal stories of how he had been led in recent years to choosing a college to attend, finding a wonderful wife and, much to their surprise, moving halfway around the world to serve the Lord in Taipei!  After this the groups spent time sharing, discussing and praying.

Prayer points:

[1] Praise God for his wonderful amazing grace to meet the seekers, and all of us, where we are and to lead us, guide us to himself.

[2] Pray that not one sheep be lost, that those who have not yet turned to the Lord be not resistant, but have a soft heart open to the Spirit’s work in salvation.

[3] Thank the Father for the continued growth of deep friendship, unity and spiritual depth of the groups, which comes by the amazing grace through Jesus Christ.  We ask that in the coming weeks these groups quite naturally transition into post-Alpha cell groups of the church in which the seekers continue to be discipled, to be baptized and mature in Christ.

[4] Pray for health, rest, and fruitful quiet times for the co-worker teams as they grow in the unity that reflects the life of the Trinity.  Pray that they be filled with joy as they witness the amazing outpouring of grace and fruit, week-by-week in Alpha.

2011 ALPHA Weekend - Who is the Holy Spirit? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alicia
Thursday, 03 November 2011 03:04
We just got back from a miraculous weekend.  Old Christians, new Christians, and seekers alike all experienced the Living God—every single one of us. The scenery was so beautiful, too—we were in the mountains with perfect weather and fun outdoor activities.  We all relaxed together, did silly games, heard great teachings, and enjoyed amazing food.

Overall, ALPHA weekend was such a nice get-away.  It was like a big vacation with too many friends to count.  We met at the church pretty early, boarded three big buses, and had fun from there.  Many Taiwanese co-workers shared about the Holy Spirit in ways that confirmed what all of us could feel around us—the Holy Spirit Himself, in Truth.  We heard teachings on who He is, how to be filled, and how to walk in His Spirit.  Between teachings and small group times, we played games outside, drank coffee, went swimming, rested, etc.  The place we stayed in was so nice—huge beds, air conditioning, and hot tubs in each bathroom.

He moved so personally in each of us and we had so much fun being together.  Miracles and healing really did take place in people’s hearts—some who could never have joy or never felt loved before literally felt His hands on them, holding them, and heard His voice, speaking to the hidden parts of their lives that no one else knows about.

Thank you for your prayers during that time.  Please continue to lift up the remainder of our time together in ALPHA and that the relationships would continue to deepen beyond the course period.

Last Friday evening marked our 5th ALPHA meeting for the 2011 Fall Season. It's hard to believe how quickly the time is passing and that we are almost half way finished! Although the weather was gloomy and rainy outside, there was lots of cheeriness and warmth inside as friends, new and old alike, gathered together for another fun evening. After a delicious meal, Caty led us in a game entitled "Guess Who?" For this game, after a question was given and answers written down, one person in the group had to guess who had written what answer. It was fun trying to see how well we knew each other! After a few rounds of guessing, the game came to an end and the stage was given to John and Robin. John's topic for the night was "How and why do we Pray?" He did an excellent job of interweaving Scripture with personal stories, and by the end of the talk, I beleive everyone in the room was encouraged and had learned something. One of the highlights of his talk were some of the pictures he used- some dating back to the 1970's when he first moved to Taiwan! Also, it was evident that he and Robin are good friends - they had excellent teamwork as Robin translated his talk into Chinese.

Currently at ALPHA we are all gearing up for the ALPHA weekend, which is happening in just a little over a week. The ALPHA weekend is a great time for us to all get away together, enjoy new scenery, and deepen relationships. Up to date, there are about 80 people registered- it's going to be a great time for sure!

The Lord is doing neat things through His Church in ALPHA. What a joy it is to serve together with brothers and sisters who all have a desire to see God's Kingdom come!

ALPHA Week 3-Why Did Jesus Have to Die? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kalan
Tuesday, 04 October 2011 08:27

ALPHA Week 3 finished on Friday night. We have seen lots of people come back after the first two weeks and committed groups of seekers are plugging in. More foreign coworkers joined us for the first time this week as well. Caty started the evening with mixer using people 'favorites'-favorite movie, favorite dessert, favorite place in Taiwan.

This gave everyone a chance to mingle, get to know each other better and see cross-cultural similarities.

In the spirit of the season (the autumn season that is), we all sang "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by CCR. The song fit perfectly with the torrential downpour outside and the Typhoon pushing torrential rain and wind onto the island over the weekend.

Erich took the ALPHA groups on a time-traveling adventure to explore the question 'Why did Jesus have to Die?'. After an introduction to the facts of crucifixion, Erich interviewed various persons of interest who were present the morning Jesus rose from the dead. The emotional weight of this topic brought home the cost Jesus paid for us and how important his sacrifice was. It also provided the connection to understanding how sinful we are and how the world is broken because of our sin.

This is an important time for the ALPHA groups to explore how Jesus really impacts their life and can change who they are on the deepest level. They can see how much Jesus loved them and how they really need him in their lives.

PLEASE PRAY for the following important things:

  • That our new friends who attended previously would be moved by the Spirit to return, and remain stable attenders throughout the season.
  • That seekers would begin to experience Jesus personally and recognize their need for his sacrifice in their own lives.
  • For continued unity and joyful cooperation among our 60+ co-workers.
  • For continued creativity and endurance among our English co-worker team.

Dear Friends,

With the 2nd week of ALPHA just behind us, the season is in full swing! This season of our Bilingual ALPHA Course started off with a bang, as our talented co-worker Caty led the group in a fun get-to-know-you game (see picture :). The game rolled into Caty leading everyone in singing "The more we get together the happier we'll be". All throughout the Lord gave us a really warm and welcoming atmosphere.

After the song, our cell group leader, Kalan, gave the first ALPHA Talk, entitled: "Is There More to Life Than This?", introducing what ALPHA is all about, and sharing about Jesus being the Way, the Truth, and the Life. For many of our Taiwanese friends in attendance, this was the first time to meet Jesus!

Like every ALPHA night, the evening closed with a 45-minute group discussion time. During this segment we discuss the impact of the ALPHA Talk on our lives in small groups, as well as get to know each other and make new friends. At 9:30pm, when ALPHA officially ends, our Administration co-workers had trouble getting some of the groups to leave, since they were so involved in discussion!

Here are some pictures from the evening. Just click on any picture to enlarge it - enjoy!

ALPHA Week 2 was last night, and went just as well. Besides welcoming back many old friends, it was great to see many new friends joining us for the first time. The evening kicked off with Erich leading the group in a "Cultural Trivia" game. Here are two of the questions - see if you know the answers :D

Culture Question 1: In the US, what does the following idiom mean: "I have a bun in the oven"? A. Dinner is ready; B. I made my wife mad; or C. I'm pregnant
Culture Question 2: In England, what does the following idiom mean: "I’m totally knackered"? A. I'm completely tired; B. I'm out of cash; C. I'm in huge trouble

The group that answered all 7 questions correctly received a prize.

After the game, our very own Niall, from Transition Band, led us in singing "Help!", by the Beatles, then going into the band's runaway hit song "Dui Bu Qi, Wo De Zhong Wen Bu Hao", which has by now received over 300,000 views on YouTube!

Our speaker for the evening was Caty, who spoke on the topic "Who is Jesus?" Again, many of our new Taiwanese friends heard the good news of Jesus for the very first time! Caty did a fantastic job, delivering the truth of the Gospel in a friendly and relaxed way.

Following the ALPHA Talk, the groups ended with a discussion time. Each of our 11 small group leaders reported great feedback after the evening ended. Many of our guests are showing interest in knowing Jesus more!

PLEASE PRAY for the following important things:
  • That our new friends who attended Week 1 or 2 would be moved by the Spirit to return, and remain stable attenders througout the season.
  • For continued unity and joyful cooperation among our 60+ co-workers.
  • For continued creativity and endurance among our English co-worker team.

MANY THANKS for lifting our ALPHA Course to the Father!

Friday, 11 March 2011 08:15

Dear Friends,

Last Tuesday night at our monthly Zone Meeting, Pastor Moses shared with the Zone that our 2011 Spring Bilingual ALPHA season has been pushed back to June / July. The reason is that we didn't have enough Taiwanese small group co-workers register, and the groups that registered were not prepared enough. Part of the reason for this is that many of our co-workers from last season are still busy discipling young believers from last Fall, which is wonderful! So instead of starting our 2011 Spring ALPHA without adequate preparation, we will take some extra time to prepare, and run a solid Summer ALPHA Course.

One recurring emphasis during the Zone Meeting was that all of our Zone's cell groups need to embody the ALPHA Spirit at all times. The ALPHA Spirit means purposefully spending time with the not-yet-believers in our lives, and making sure our cell groups are inviting and safe places for them. This is what our Master did too!

Please continue praying for our 2011 Summer Bilingual ALPHA Course!
Blessings,
Erich and Kelley

DSC00287 This past Monday, on one of Taiwan's national holidays, a group of over 100 participants took a trip into the beautiful mountains outside of Wulai.  We were blessed with amazing weather and a wonderful venue. After a 30 minute bus ride, we arrived at a small tea farm overlooking a river pass.  We quickly were divided into our groups and were led in a round of ice breakers and games.  The highlight of that time being a game called "crocodile swamp" in which teams had to cross from one end to the other with only four points/ 2 members bridging the gap in the middle.  Teammates were encouraged to grab on to each other as they crossed through the "swamp". Needless to say, people quickly became quite comfortable with one another and the game itself generated a lot of laughs and positive energy that carried us throughout the day.

Following the games, we were led in a wonderful time of music and worship that really uplifted our spirits. Then, our events coordinator, Ariel, was able to share a bit BBQ about this upcoming season of ALPHA and encourage our friends and seekers to come back to find out more, in line with this season's theme of "Let's "C", Let's Go."  Afterwards, we walked to a nearby area, found our groups and had a great time of barbequing and fellowshipping with one another.

After a rather abundant feast of food and fun, the participants attended one of two afternoon activities: soap making or an ecological walk.  The soap making workshop included a thorough explanation of that region's tea leaves and a soap making tutorial. Participants were able to make their own bars of soap using tea extracts from that area. The ecological walk took us out to the surrounding region where we were given a very informative tour of the plants and flowers native to that region of Taiwan.  It was a refreshing time and a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends while enjoying all of God's creation.  We all left thankful for the time we spent together and excited for the things God has in store for us in these upcoming months.

Please continue to lift up the preparations that need to be made and in place before this next season of ALPHA can begin.  More specifically:
1.  pray that God will raise up people to become group coworkers and administrators
2.  pray for wisdom for our leadership team, specifically Cindy, this season's ALPHA chairperson
3.  pray for God's continued guidance in our work and ministry here in Taiwan

Dear Praying Friends,

We wanted to let everyone know that our 2011 Spring Bilingual ALPHA Season is kicking off on April 8!
Some brothers and sisters from our Zone at Truth Church are planning a pre-ALPHA Outing for Monday February 28, which is a national holiday. It will be a one-day outing to somewhere green outside of the busy city. This outing will also provide an excellent platform for us to invite our non-believing friends, who can begin catching the ALPHA vision!
An excellent team of English co-workers will be meeting shortly to discuss our involvement in the pre-ALPHA Outing, and the regular season.

Please pray for the 2011 Spring ALPHA Season in these ways:
  • Taiwanese co-workers are registering their co-workers in small groups of 4. Please pray for the right co-workers to commit, and for us to end up with at least 8 strong small groups (10-12 would be better)!
  • Pray for all the non-believing friends we invite to happily join in the Season, and for our Lord to begin His transforming work in each of their lives!

As always, we thank all of you for remembering ALPHA in your prayers. Without the prayer of faith we can accomplish nothing of spiritual value!

Stay tuned for more news as we approach April 8!

Fall 2010 ALPHA in Numbers PDF Print E-mail
Written by Erich
Thursday, 20 January 2011 07:27
Dear Praying Friends,

The 2010 Fall ALPHA Season left us amazed once again at what the Lord can accomplish with a few willing servants, and concerted prayer!

We hardly ever talk about numbers in ALPHA, but at this point we wanted to give you some of the figures for the past season.

During the entire 11-week course, over 200 non-believing Taiwanese attended at least one Friday night ALPHA meeting. Although each week's topic is different, our new friends are always exposed to the Gospel in different ways. So praise our Lord with us for touching the lives of so many people. In our experience, many of these people will return in the coming seasons to experience more of ALPHA, and get to know our Lord better.

Of these 200 new friends, 33 attended ALPHA at least 6 weeks, out of the possible 11.

Out of these 33 stable attendees, there were 31 that continued meeting in their ALPHA cell groups, thus integrating into our Taiwanese church's cell group system.

Besides the stable attenders, another 16 of the less stable attendees integrated into our church's cell groups, which makes for

a total of 47 people

integrated into our Taiwanese church. Practically speaking this means that these people are willing to be led through our church's "New Life Book" by a mature Believer. This book teaches them the main doctrines of the Christian Faith in 10 weeks, and is part of our church's baptismal preparation.

We are also very excited to report that several of these new friends were baptized this past Sunday (01/23/2011)!

Again, these numbers are in no way meant to praise our human efforts, but instead to bring glory to God, who is the only one capable of bringing people to new life in Christ!

We know that many of you are a vital support to this ministry through ongoing prayer, and we want to say a big THANK YOU to each one of you!

The next ALPHA Season is scheduled to kick off March 18. Let's continue partnering together in prayer to see the Lord do even greater things!

The Fall 2010 Bilingual Alpha Course has now come to a close, and it ended with a bang.  Last Friday's meeting was a celebration dinner.   It was a pot luck meal with all the discussion groups bringing their own dishes.  We had quite a spread!  The hungry stomach could find satisfaction with anything from pizza to Beijing Duck.

171 153 009 130

Following the meal, the various groups entertained us all with music, dances, and skits.  It was amazing to see how much talent was in the room!  The groups used this time to express both how much they had enjoyed the Alpha course and also what they had learned over the past ten weeks.

The course may be over, but it is our hope that things are just beginning for those who came.  The seeds of the gospel and of relationships were sown, and it is our desire to see these seeds take root and grow.  Please continue in prayer for us and for those who attended the course.  And our whole English co-worker team would like to thank each of you so much for your prayer support throughout the course!

We will begin regularly updating this blog again when we begin preparing for the next Bilingual Alpha Course, which is set to begin in the Spring of 2011.

It seems like we just started this Alpha course, but it turns out we are just under two weeks from the end.  It is has been as fast as it has been good!

After the Alpha weekend, we decided to give the different groups in the Alpha course more responsibilities in the Friday night meetings.  This meant allowing different groups to organize the game and song part of the evening.  They did well.  We played a game in which the different teams had to line up various items they had brought with them, such as pens and business cards, to see which team could make the longest line.  It is amazing how many business cards are in a room at any given time!  We followed the game by singing Amazing Grace.

Kelley spoke this Friday.  Her topic was the issue of telling others about Christ.  She did a fine job of sharing both why and how we should and can spread the good news of Christ's love and sacrifice for us.  What a glorious thing it will be to see some of these people who have only just heard about Christ sharing him with others!

We only have a couple more meetings, so please be in prayer as we draw this Alpha course to a close.  We hope to finish strong!

Dear Friends,

We just got back from our 2010 Fall ALPHA Weekend, which went from Nov 20-21. Altogether about 90 people participated, with about half being Truth Church co-workers, and half being Seekers. Together we played English games led by Erich and Kelley, enjoyed some bilingual worship led by Ellie and Julianne, and listened to Pastor Moses and Calvin speaking on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. There was a lot of laughter, learning, and deepening relationships with each other, and the Lord.
Here are some pictures of the ALPHA Weekend. Enjoy! And as always, thanks so much for sustaining this vital ministry in prayer!

Week seven's edition of Alpha has now come and gone.  We had a blast, as usual.  This was the last week before the Alpha weekend, so we were pleased to have a good group attending.

After an excellent meal, we played a game that encouraged everyone to "evolve."  In the game, people had to move through different stages by winning games of "rock, paper, scissors."  They went from being eggs to being chickens to being monkeys to being T-rexes.  Everyone enjoyed getting bigger and stronger!  After the game, Erich had all the different groups come up with motions to the song "This is the Day."  It was great to see all the adults coming up with their own dances!

For the message, we watched a video of Nicky Gumbel, the head of the Alpha course.  He spoke on the topic of how God guides us, touching on points such as the clear commands of Scripture, common sense, and the compelling of the Spirit.

Next weekend many of the attendees and coworkers will be going on the Alpha retreat.  They will spend a couple of days enjoying each other's company and learning about the Holy Spirit.  Please be in prayer for everyone involved with that, both during the next few days of preparation and the two days they are at the retreat.  We will give you a report of how it went next week.

Though it seems like we just started, our 11 week Alpha course in just over halfway done now.  Every week has been a blessing and a joy.  Weeks 5 and 6 were no exception.  The theme for the last two weeks has been communication with God.  What a joy it is to show people that God speaks to them and how we may speak with him.

Last week, Ben spoke about the Bible and how to read it.  It is privilege to be able to open up God's special revelation to people who were previously ignorant of it!  This week started with a game that got all the Chinese people using their English in groups.  One person in the group was shown a word in English and then had to get the rest of the group to guess the word.  It was great practice for people trying to learn some English.  Following the game, everyone sang "I've Got Peace Like a River" with all the accompanying movements.  It was fun to take a trip back to our childhood Sunday school days!  Professor John followed the song with a short message on prayer.  In his simple but thoughtful manner, he showed what is distinctive and special about Christian prayer.

As we look forward to the rest of our Alpha course, here are some ways you can help us pray.

Please pray:

1.  That the attendees will come consistently so they can hear the good news of Christ's love.

2.  That the upcoming Alpha weekend will be a special time for both coworkers and seekers.

The last two weeks have been great at alpha.  Not only have we had a lot of fun, but the message of the gospel has been simply but powerfully presented. Last week, Beth had the challenge of speaking on the topic "Why did Jesus die?"  She did a wonderful job of presenting both our need for salvation and the provision that is found in Christ.  We have heard from a few seekers who have said that they found Beth's topic quite intriguing.  It is exciting to see people begin to take an interest if the things of God!
This past Friday started with a great game that everyone enjoyed.  It was called the "blob game", and it got different groups of people to preform random acts such as posing as da Vinci's "Last Supper" or acting like they were singing KTV.  It was a blast to see people milling about and preforming on command!  After the game, Erich led everyone in a rousing rendition of "Lean on Me."  As always, it was a hit.
Hannah introduced the topic of faith.  She used the idea of a tripod to show the three-fold foundation for our faith: the word of God, the work of Jesus, and the witness of the Holy Spirit.  This presentation meshed beautifully with Beth's presentation from week three.  We are looking forward to see how God will use these presentations to bring people to Him!
As we move forward, please pray:
1.  That God will continue to bring in the seekers who have been attending so that they might hear more about him.
2.  That God will water the seed that has been planted so that we may see fruit in the seekers' lives.
