Schindler Update 2008_09_21

September 21, 2008

Dear faithful supporters,

Greetings from Taipei! The days and weeks quickly pass by and it’s hard to believe the end of September is almost here. The last month has kept us busy, but along with the challenges and responsibilities have come many rewards. We can now write, read, and understand between 50-100 Chinese characters; we have made contact with many of the Taiwanese who are pastors of TEAM church plants, and we had an excellent kick-off to our 3E English outreach ministry. God has brought to us 38 Seekers who have committed to join our outreach for the next 10 weeks.

Prayer Requests:

  • For a good understanding and clarity of mind as we study Chinese.
  • Pray for the 38 Seekers who have registered and are now attending the first season of our new 3E outreach. For the next 10 weeks, we will be focusing on building relationships with them and praying for natural ways to share our faith.
  • We continue to need monthly support. Please pray for our remaining need of $950/month.

Praises:

  • The first meeting of 3E went very smoothly yesterday. Praise the Lord for the way our co-workers (Taiwanese and Americans) have worked together and prepared for this new season. We know the Lord has great things in store!
  • A new missionary family has recently arrived in Taipei and have already become good friends. Praise the Lord for the good connection He has given us, and pray that together we will have opportunities to reach out to the Lost here in Taipei.

Please continue checking our website for more frequent information and pictures. We are thankful for all of you and continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Please don’t hesitate to let us know how we can specifically be lifting you up! To God be the glory, great things He has done!

For the Glory of God,
Erich and Kelley Schindler

3 weeks down!!

Today ended our third week in the classroom as official Chinese students. We feel that in just three weeks our comprehension and speaking abillities have increased significantly. Walking down the streets we now recognize more than 2 characters! The program we are in is quite intense, and is focused on learning reading, speaking, writing, and listening all at an equal level. We have a quiz or test most days, and once a week we are partnered with another classmate to write and present a Chinese dialogue using all the vocabulary we have learned. We are excited to see where we’ll be in 3 months from now! We had a test yesterday and I’m happy to say we both scored over 90%!

Thanks to those of you who track with us through this blog. We love hearing from you!

The new 3E has begun!!

The picture is of all the co-workers of 3E (minus Erich who was taking the picture). For 3E, we put our individual giftings, talents, and personalities together to reach out to the Lost in Taipei. We couldn’t ask for a better, more committed team to work with! To learn more about what 3E is exactly, please visit our “Ministry Details” link on the menu to the left. The Lord blessed us with a wonderful first meeting, and are very excited to see what God will do in the weeks to come.

Rain, rain….has finally gone away

The past few days have been nothing but wet here in Taipei. Typhoon Sinlaku made its way around the island over the weekend, causing a lot of wind and rain. But, the first streaks of sunlight did make their way through the clouds this afternoon. One doesn’t realize how thankful one is for sunshine until it’s gone for four days!

Here we are with our new best friends:
Best friends

We have one week of formal Chinese learning under our belts, and are brains are saturated with character memorization, (just for your information- there are over 40,000 Chinese characters total, so learning Chinese is really a life-long process) tone recognition, and the stroke order needed to write each specific character. To date, we can read, say, and write approximately 35 characters- not too bad for one week of class!
Prayer focus:

  • For clarity of mind and strength as we study Chinese.
  • Our English outreach begins this Saturday. We are very excited to begin this new season. We have 35 people registered, and look forward to the Lord doing many great things in their hearts and lives because of 3E!
  • We are continually praying for more monthly supporters. To date, we are at about 60% of what TEAM requires we raise.

Chinese Class

Hi everyone,

Here are some pictures of our first two days of Chinese class. Enjoy!

Prayer Focus: We are currently taking 3.5 hours of Chinese classes each day from Monday to Friday. Homework takes us around an additional 1 hour each day. Please pray that we would learn quickly and continue to enjoy the challenge of learning a difficult language. Please also pray that we would manage our time wisely between language study, ministry, and personal time.
Thanks so much for praying for us, and to those who keep in touch. It means a lot to us.

Tomorrow's a busy one….

Monday, September 8th, will be a very busy day for us. We will board a High Speed Train at 7:42 a.m. and travel to the middle part of Taiwan, to a city called Taichung. We’ll arrive around 8:34a.m. (a normal train takes about 2 1/2- 3 hrs to make this trip!), and then travel another 30 minutes by car to a camp called Da Jya, where we are scheduled to speak right after 9:00 a.m. We are going to share our testimonies, ministry goals, and vision for serving in Taiwan with approximately 50 Taiwanese pastors, as well as some TEAM missionaries. Since we are new TEAM arrivees in Taiwan, it’s important that we connect with both the national pastors serving in TEAM planted churches, as well as the other missionaries scattered around the island. We’ll share for approximately 20-30 minutes, with Chinese translation, and then quickly eat some breakfast before rushing back to the train station where we need to catch a train back to Taipei at 10:45a.m. The rush is because our language school begins tomorrow, in Taipei, at 12:20 p.m.! So, please pray all the trains are on time, that the Lord speaks through us as we share our testimonies and ministry goals, and that we are alert during our 2 hour Chinese class. Starting tomorrow, we will have class everyday from 12:20-2:10 p.m.

Today we attended church at 9:00 a.m., and then joined a prayer meeting from 10:45 a.m.- 12:00p.m., which I, Kelley, had the privilege of leading. There were approximately 30 people in the prayer meeting, 25 Taiwanese and 5 Americans. As we joined our hearts in prayer, it was a beautiful picture of what Heaven will be like, where people from every tribe, tongue, and nation, gather together to praise our Lord!

That’s all for now….thanks for tracking with us through this blog!
